Whether Garamond, Baskerville or Bodoni, many of the typefaces produced during the 20th century were revivals of centuries-old models. Not so of Palatino: Hermann Zapf´s new design is an interpretation of our own time. Designed between 1948 and 1950, Palatino was first released as in lead type form by the German typefoundry D. Stempel AG in Frankfurt, and quickly became one of the world´s most popular typefaces. Palatino was thereafter altered for use on the Linotype machine and in photo-type composition. Due to customer demand and the desire to keep designs similar across competing formats, the adaptions of Palatino for newer technologies maintained the compromises that had been made in previous generations and older media, even into the digital age. Palatino´s esteem has long required a comprehensive revision. Idea The idea for Generis™ came to Erik Faulhaber while he was traveling in the USA. Seeing typefaces mixed together in a business district motivated him to create a new type system with interrelated forms. The first design scheme came about in 1997, following the space saving model of American Gothics. As development progressed, a serif face, a slab serif design, and a further simplified sans serif were added. Consisting in each case of two typographic styles with and without serifs, Generis represents a type system for the next generation. Generis System The unified basic form and the individual peculiarity of the styles lead to Generis’ systematic, total-package concept. Every style builds itself around a core of weights: Light, Regular, Medium, and Bold. Additional weights, small caps, old style figures and true italics complete the system. Univers™ Family Value Pack contains 28 font weights The font Univers is one of the greatest typographic achievements of the second half of the 20th century The typeface has the advantage of having a variety of weights which even combined give an impression of steadiness and homogeneity. The clear, objective forms of Univers make this a legible font suitable for almost any typographic need. In 1954 the type foundry Deberny & Peignot wanted to add a linear sans serif antiqua in several weights to the range of the Lumitype-fonts. Adrian Frutiger suggested refraining from adapting an existing alphabet and instead to develop a new font that would, above all, be suitable for the typesetting of longer texts. Using his old sketches from the School for the Applied Arts, he creates Univers font, which was published with Deberny & Peignot in 1957 and, afterwards, was produced by Linotype. Deberny & Peignot was acquired in 1924 by D. Stempel AG/Linotype and Adrian Frutiger continued to work for Linotype until today.Univers font was created almost simultaneously with other successful alphabets: Helvetica (1957) and Optima (1958). Whereas Helvetica, for example, had a general clarity and a modern, timeless and neutral effect without any conspicuous attributes (lending to its great success), Univers expressed a factual and cool elegance, a rational competence. Vialog™ is based on a normally proportioned transportation typeface that Professor Werner Schneider designed as 'Euro Type' for the German Federal Transportation Ministry in 1988. Behind its forms are comprehensive studies of the legibility of European transportation typefaces regarding their optimization and standardization. Professor Schneider worked with Helmut Ness of the design agency Fuenfwerken to give the typeface a new look. The main idea was to create a space-saving text typeface that could be used in the challenging field of transportation and information typography, but also fulfill the requirements of a corporate typeface. In spite of the relatively robust forms, Vialog™ remains an aesthetic and legible typeface due to its detail and quality. Sketches for Optima™ have been done first on a 1000 Lire banknote in 1950. To make notes from inscriptions in Santa Croce in Florence no paper was at hand and therefore Hermann Zapf took a banknote to make sketches. In 1952 the first drawings were finished after careful legibility tests for a typeface. The type was cut by the famous punchcutter August Rosenberger at the D. Stempel AG typefoundry in Frankfurt and produced also in matrices for the Linotype typesetting machines. Unfortunately no real Italic was manufactured, but only an oblique version of the roman. The basis idea of Optima™ was to develop a typeface between a Sans-serif like the Futura® and a classical Roman like Bodoni, To avoid the monotony of the streight lines of an ordinary Sans-serif the stems have slightly curved out lines, typical for all Optima™ alphabets. This makes the elegance for the various Optima™ designs. After 50 years since the beginning of Optima™ a complete redesign was made named Linotype Optima™ nova in producing digital alphabets without technical compromises. The careful work of the new designs was done in close collaboration of Hermann Zapf with the Japanese type designer and computer expert Akira Kobayashi from Tokyo. All Optima™ alphabets were new shaped and additional weights had been added, like Linotype Opima™ nova Titling, capital letters with special and unusual letter combinations and ligatures. Optima™ nova Titling is a welcomed font for headlines, logos and advertising purposes. Linotype Optima™ nova is available for Macintosh and PC on a CD with both platforms. All weights contain an integrated Euro symbol. The design of Linotype Sabon™ Next by Jean Francois Porchez, a revival of a revival, was a double challenge: to try to discern Jan Tschichold´s own wishes for the original Sabon™, and to interpret the complexity of a design originally made in two versions for different systems. The first was designed for use on Linotype and Monotype systems. The second version of Sabon™ was designed for Stempel handsetting, and it seems closer to a pure interpretation of Garamond without many constraints. Naturally Porchez based Linotype Sabon™ Next on this second version and also referred to original Garamond™ models, carefully improving the proportions of the existing digital Sabon™ while matching its alignments. The new family includes 6 weights up to Black, Small Caps for most of the weights and Old style Figures and one Ornament font. The standard versions include revised lining figures designed a little smaller than capitals. Linotype Sabon™ Next is available for Macintosh and PC on a CD with both platforms. All weights contain an integrated Euro symbol. The character set supports a total of 48 different roman languages. Background information Helvetica™ is one of the most famous and popular typefaces in the world. It lends an air of lucid efficiency to any typographic message with its clean, no-nonsense shapes. The original typeface was called Haas Grotesk, and was designed in 1957 by Max Miedinger for the Haas'sche Schriftgiesserei (Haas Type Foundry) in Switzerland. In 1960 the name was changed to Helvetica (an adaptation of "Helvetia", the Latin name for Switzerland). Over the years, the Helvetica family was expanded to include many different weights, but these were not as well coordinated with each other as they might have been. In 1983, D. Stempel AG and Linotype re-designed and digitized Neue Helvetica and updated it into a cohesive font family. Today, the original Helvetica family consists of 34 different font weights, and the Neue Helvetica family consists of 51 font weights. The numbering system describes Helvetica's characteristics and is similar to the numbering system of the Univers family. The basic or regular font, "Helvetica roman", forms the central point of the system with the designation "55 roman". The first figure of the number describes the weight - 25 ultra light to 107 extra black. The second figure gives width information - Helvetica 53 extended to Helvetica 57 condensed. The Helvetica family now forms an integral part of many digital printers and operating systems and has become a stylistic anchor in our visual culture. It is the quintessential sans serif font, timeless and neutral, and can be used for all types of communication. Avenir™ Next: The Beautiful Stranger. Or why there´s now an Avenir Next. While Adrian Frutiger has created such famous typefaces as Univers™ or Frutiger™, another matter has remained very close to his heart – the design of his linear sans serif – the Avenir. In 1988, the Swiss typeface designer first presented Avenir to the public, which already at that time marked an excellent alternative to other well known typefaces such as Futura® or Avant Garde®. Compared to the mere metric construction of other typefaces, Avenir was convincing because of its optical construction which lent it a more humane appearance, as seen, for instance, in the classically drawn "a". Avenir was originally released with 6 weights for which Frutiger had carefully selected the increments in line thickness. In typographical practice, however, this proved to be a limiting factor, along with the missing bold weights. Hence, the true potential of Avenir as a contemporary typeface failed to be recognized. The love of linear symbols. Adrian Frutiger has completely reworked the Avenir type family in close cooperation with Akira Kobayashi, Type Director at Linotype Library. The result is the Avenir Next with harmoniously incremented weights and matching condensed versions. Avenir Next is part of the Platinum Collection and comes in 4 typeface sets, Regular, Italic, Condensed and Condensed Italic, each equipped with 6 different stem weights. All 24 weights include true small caps and old style figures. Avenir Next thereby now offers an optimal balance of harmony and contrast. With the addition of the condensed variants, Avenir Next represents a full-fledged contem-porary grotesque, providing professional graphic designers with the greatest degree of typographical flexibility and optimal legibility.
