Linotype introduces a new type library with 1,392 ready-to-use fonts on CD.
The new OpenType format offers a number of major advantages over PostScript and TrueType formats. Just one font file contains all known character sets belonging to a type. For example, all variations of the type Sabon roman are in one single font. Even the small caps and old style figures that used to be individual fonts are now integrated into the one OpenType font. This saves memory space and reduces the font menu. Since the OpenType format is relatively new, there are still a number of applications that do not fully support the format as yet QuarkXPress users for example can use OpenType fonts but cannot access the extra characters contained in it. To do this, Linotype offers its "Flirt" solution with the existing PostScript fonts and expanded character sets. Microsoft applications can also work with OpenType fonts, but the foreign language functions of the Pro fonts with Eastern European characters cannot be used. For this too the "Flirt" solution has the traditional PC TrueType fonts that have become standard in offices everywhere. The new Linotype OpenType Flirt offers the ideal solution for all areas of advertising and communication. In addition to the OpenType fonts Linotype supplies with OpenType Flirt the equivalent legacy versions in Mac PS, PC PS and PC TT formats for usage with non OpenType compliant applications. The Linotype OpenType Flirt has also been made user-friendlier through an attractive licensing model. It is available in two versions: a basic license for 10 workstations which is a good solution particularly for smaller companies and a a traditional one with a basic license for 20 workstations for larger corporations. Linotype offers an upgrade with all 1,392 OpenType fonts for all GoldEdition users, called "Linotype OpenType Upgrade CD". Linotype also offers cost-effective custom-made license extensions.
